SEO KPIs in the AI Search Era: Measuring AEO and GEO

Written by Viet SEO Team Posted date: Updated: 1
A practical framework for measuring AI search visibility, citations, referrals and business outcomes, with KPI definitions, reporting tables and verification checks.

A website can be mentioned or cited in an AI answer without receiving an immediate visit. Equally, more search impressions do not necessarily generate more qualified enquiries. Measuring SEO in the AI search era requires visibility, website activity and business outcomes to be considered together.

This guide explains how to choose AEO and GEO KPIs, identify suitable data sources, calculate citation rates within a monitoring sample and build reports with verifiable evidence.

AEO and GEO measurement combines website data with documented observations from individual platforms.

What are SEO KPIs in the AI search era?

SEO KPIs for AI search are selected measures of discoverability, brand mentions, citations, website visits and business outcomes across search experiences that use AI. A useful framework retains traditional SEO measures and adds platform-specific evidence where it is available.

AEO emphasizes answering relevant questions, while GEO concerns visibility in generative responses. These approaches overlap. GEO is not a search-result format, and neither approach can be evaluated reliably through one universal score.

Businesses can incorporate this framework into a broader GEO strategy while continuing to monitor organic search performance and lead quality.

Separate three types of evidence

Evidence type Example Reporting approach
Directly recorded data Search Console clicks, GA4 sessions and key events, CRM leads. Identify the source, scope, implementation and tracking limitations.
Sampled observations The domain is linked in 18 of 60 monitored answer checks. Limit the conclusion to the monitored questions and conditions.
Estimates or models A revenue scenario based on assumed CTR and conversion rates. Keep separate from actual results and disclose assumptions.

A monitoring check is not a real-user impression. Likewise, a count of observed brand mentions does not establish how many people saw the brand.

Which KPIs should you track?

1. Business outcomes

Prioritize qualified leads, completed appointments, orders or revenue that your systems can record. Define appropriate success events, such as a successfully submitted enquiry or confirmed transaction.

A phone-link click or messaging-button click indicates interest, but is not automatically a completed conversation or new customer. Reconcile these interactions with CRM or sales records where possible.

2. Visits and engagement from identifiable sources

Track sessions, landing pages, key events and lead quality from AI sources that can be identified in your data. Maintain and periodically review the source definitions used in reports.

Some platforms and apps do not pass complete referral information. Do not classify all Direct traffic as AI traffic. UTM parameters help only when the incoming link actually carries them; adding an event cannot reconstruct an unknown source.

At landing-page level, consider average engagement time, engagement rate and meaningful events. Use scroll-depth data only with a defined implementation, and do not interpret a scroll event as proof that someone read an answer.

3. Citation rate within a monitoring sample

Count valid checks where the answer contains a source link to the business’s domain or selected URLs. Define what qualifies as a citation and how repeated links will be counted.

Citation rate = Valid checks with a qualifying website citation / All valid checks × 100%.

Illustrative example: 18 cited checks out of 60 valid checks produce a 30% citation rate. This describes the sample, not 30% of all AI users or market-wide impressions.

If one answer contains three links to the website, it still counts once in this formula. Total source-link count can be reported separately, with its own definition.

4. Brand mention rate

Count valid checks that mention the brand, including mentions without links, and divide by all valid checks. Review name variants, context and false matches with similarly named organizations.

Mentions and citations are different: a platform may link to an article without naming the business in its answer, or mention a business without linking to it. Report the two rates separately.

5. Question and URL coverage

Record how many monitored questions receive at least one citation during the reporting period and which URLs are linked. Group the findings by informational, comparison, supplier-selection or post-purchase topics.

Coverage can reveal useful content gaps. However, a cited prompt in a monitoring set is not the same as a known real-user query that produced a website conversion.

6. Google Search performance and branded queries

Retain impressions, clicks, CTR and average position from Search Console, segmented by relevant pages, country and device. Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode activity in its overall Web performance reporting; do not assume every AI format can be isolated in the report or API.

For branded searches, define filters covering the company name, domain and appropriate variants. Compare equivalent periods and record advertising, PR, events and seasonality.

Branded-query growth is supporting evidence. A simultaneous increase in AI visibility does not establish that AI caused the growth.

Data sources and their limitations

Source Useful for Important limitation
Search Console Google queries, pages, impressions and clicks within report scope. Not a complete feature-by-feature inventory of AI answers; query reporting can be incomplete.
GA4 On-site behavior and key events by source and landing page. Depends on tracking, consent, blockers and available referral information.
CRM and sales records Lead quality, sales progress and revenue. Requires consistent identification, deduplication and source handling.
Platform checks and third-party trackers Answers, mentions and source URLs observed at a particular time. The sample or API response may differ from real users’ experiences.
Server logs Requests, response status and verified crawler activity. Do not reveal all search queries, AI-answer views or zero-click conversions.

A Googlebot request shows crawling activity, not proof of an AI citation. Referrer information also generally does not provide complete search-query information.

Linking Search Console and GA4 supports analysis through compatible dimensions, such as landing page. It does not create an exact match between each organic query and each converting visitor. Avoid presenting query-level sales attribution as certain when the underlying data cannot support it.

How to build a consistent monitoring set

  1. Define the goal: brand recognition, citations or qualified enquiries.
  2. Select relevant questions: use real customer needs, commercial priorities and search data, rather than prompts designed only to elicit the brand.
  3. Record conditions: platform, interface or API, search mode, language, location and sign-in state where relevant.
  4. Keep measurement stable: maintain a consistent schedule, repetition policy and counting method.
  5. Retain evidence: save timestamps, responses, source URLs and appropriate screenshots.
  6. Separate failed checks: log tool errors or retrieval failures instead of treating them as missing visibility.

A valid answer without a brand mention or citation still belongs in the valid-check denominator. If questions are added, report the original comparable set and the expanded set separately.

Review third-party sampling methods, coverage and terms before relying on their figures. A citation rate from selected prompts should not be described as total market share without a representative measurement design.

Can you measure conversions lost to zero-click?

GA4 and server logs cannot directly count lost conversions from people who never visited the website. A non-click may reflect a satisfied information need, no purchase intent or other circumstances; someone may also return through another channel later.

Scenario models can explore possible outcomes, but disclose the assumptions and label the result as modeled. Do not add hypothetical conversions to recorded conversions or report estimated revenue as actual sales.

Broader research can include “How did you hear about us?” questions, brand studies or appropriately designed experiments. These methods also have uncertainty and limits on causal interpretation.

A monthly AEO and GEO reporting template

Use three sections: key developments, evidence and metrics, and priority actions. For each KPI, record its definition, source, period, previous-period value and data-quality notes.

KPI group Report Evidence and caveats
Business outcomes Qualified leads, appointments, orders or measurable revenue. Validated CRM and tracking; state how sources are assigned.
Website activity Sessions, landing pages and key events from identifiable AI sources. GA4; disclose source definitions and referral limitations.
Citations Cited checks, total valid checks and citation rate. Stable prompt set and retained source evidence.
Brand recognition Mentioned checks, total valid checks and mention rate. Separate from citations and exclude false brand matches.
Content coverage Questions and URLs cited during the period. Break down by topic, platform and language.
Google Search Impressions, clicks, CTR and branded queries for priority page groups. Search Console; do not assume complete AI-feature segmentation.

Example interpretation: “Citation rate improved within the fixed monitoring set, but qualified leads have not yet shown a clear increase. Next month, verify referral tracking and review the most frequently cited landing pages.” This distinguishes the observed change from the unresolved business question.

When should you investigate or optimize?

  • Citation rate falls: first check collection failures, platform changes and prompt-set differences, then investigate content and technical issues.
  • Impressions rise but clicks fall: segment queries, pages, devices and positions; inspect results before attributing the decline to AI.
  • Visits rise but qualified leads do not: check tracking, traffic quality, service information and forms.
  • The brand is mentioned inaccurately: review company details, source material and inconsistent descriptions.

A 20% decline can be an internal review trigger, but is not a universal standard. Small samples can move sharply after only a few checks. Show absolute counts and percentage-point changes across multiple periods.

Choose actions that address a diagnosed problem: clearer answers, evidence, internal links, canonical rules or accessibility. Do not add schema automatically because citations fell. A separately scoped SEO audit can help investigate specific concerns.

Verification checklist before reporting success

  • Business objectives and meaningful events are defined.
  • Recorded, observed and modeled data are labeled separately.
  • Periods use comparable questions, conditions and counting rules, or differences are disclosed.
  • Valid-check counts, errors and supporting evidence are available.
  • Tracking changes and duplicate events have been checked.
  • Seasonality, advertising and simultaneous website changes have been considered.
  • Crawl logs are not used to infer user queries or zero-click conversions.
  • Recommended actions have an owner, scope and review date.

Frequently asked questions

Does Search Console list every AI citation?

No. Google’s AI-feature activity is included in Web performance reporting. Citations on other platforms need separate evidence, and Search Console is not a complete cross-platform citation inventory.

Is answer share the same as search market share?

Not automatically. A rate calculated from monitored prompts describes that sample. State its coverage and counting rules rather than presenting it as a share of all users.

Do more citations mean more revenue?

Not necessarily. Citations describe visibility; visits, lead quality and sales outcomes require additional measurement.

Which KPIs should a small business start with?

Start with qualified leads, identifiable AI referrals, citation rate in a stable question set and Google Search performance for priority pages.

Choose KPIs that support business decisions

AI-search measurement is useful when it explains where content is being discovered, which visitors reach the website and what should be improved next. Stable definitions, retained evidence and transparent limitations make reporting more dependable.
